| Shower EtiquetteNow you have made up your mind that you will definitely go ahead with throwing a Baby Shower, but you are not sure who should do what. Relax and read on, you will soon be smiling :)
1. Who should throw a Baby Shower? Traditionally a close female friend of the mum to be should organise and throw a Baby Shower. Be aware that traditions have changed over the years, so these days, it a good if anyone other than the mum herself throws the Baby Shower. It is very common now to have a close sister in-law or even a very close colleague host a Baby Shower. 2. When should a Baby Shower be held? Generally a rule of thumb to use is; NOT TOO LATE or NOT TOO EARLY! A Baby Shower that is held about one or two months before the mum-to-be’s due date is ideal. Having a Baby Shower at the right is great for the parents-to-be as it gives them time to focus on the baby’s arrival and buy essential items that they feel they require after the Shower. 3. Where should a Baby Shower be held? The location of a Baby Shower is very much a personal preference. Traditionally Showers are held in the host’s home. These days it is common place to hold Baby Showers in restaurants, hotels, parks, country clubs and really just about any place where people can meet! The main things to take into consideration are your budget and accessibility. Other factors that come into consideration are the time of day that the Shower will be held and the weather. 4. What type of Baby Shower? Surprise Baby Showers are common place these days. It is more demanding to plan a surprise, but do make sure it is not too stressful for the mum-to-be. Surprise Baby Showers are more suited for second Baby Showers. For first Baby Showers, it is good to plan around the mum-to-be’s schedule and preferences. 5. Who to invite to a Baby Shower? Try as much as you can to invite everyone that the mum-to-be will like to be there. Ensure that there are no schedules conflicts with the important people that mum-to-be will like to be there, which is why it is a great idea to send out the invitations way in advance to enable guests, plan to be present at the Shower. 6. Can men attend a Baby Shower? The short answer to this question is YES! These days co-ed Baby Showers are becoming more and more popular. Many things have changed over the years, so be sure to adjust your planning as required. 7. What should be done during a Baby Shower? There is no specified rigid format for a baby shower, so you can adjust our suggestions below to suit your needs. The most important thing is that everyone should have a memorable time. However a well planned shower would look something like this:As guests arrive, be available to greet them, take their coats and make them comfortable. You can pin on them a name tag and offer a drink. There should be a ‘gift area’ or ‘gift table’ for guests to place their gifts when they arrive. It is a good idea for this table to be close to mum-to-be so that she can reach and open her gifts if this has been planned to be part of the party.Introduce new guests to those that are already present especially if they do not all know each other. When you are ready to start the Baby Shower, it is a good idea to start with an ice-breaker game to get everyone comfortable and talking. After the first game, you may play one or two more games to keep things rolling. See our Games section for great ideas. At this point, you can now start serving food to the guests. Depending on the nature of the Baby Shower, you may ask the guests to help themselves and allow them mingle.Serve dessert and use the opportunity to ask guests to say a word or two of advice to mum-to-be. Alternatively you may pass around an advice book where everyone can write in their advice for the parents-to-be.MMum-to-be can now open her presents when she has finished her dessert. After opening the present, play one last game and hand out the prizes to winners. You may now bring the Baby Shower to a close. Ensure that you are at the door to thank the guests for attending.
